Almost half of all Americans struggling with finances, worried about the future

2/3/2011

Positive economic news in recent months hasn't lightened financial woes for many Americans. A recent Public Agenda survey reveals that four in 10 Americans said that they are struggling "a lot" in the current economy.

The poll, which was funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, questioned 1,004 adults. More than one-third of the respondents who said that they were struggling have lost their jobs in the past two years. Furthermore, approximately 77 percent of those who claimed to be suffering who have children are "very worried" about paying for their child's college education.

Only two out of every 10 respondents said that they are not struggling at all. Most of these individuals showed little concern about paying their mortgages, funding college education and securing their retirement plans - all of which were significant worries of those who are struggling.

Many individuals who are anxious about their financial status will relieve some stress for a few hours this Sunday to watch the Super Bowl. According to economist Mike Moffatt, Americans who wish to rebound from the recession may want to cheer for the Green Bay Packers over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In a column for The Globe and Mail, Moffatt revealed that the economy grows at 3.1 percent in years that the NFC team wins the Super Bowl, compared to only 2.6 percent when the AFC club is victorious. Although there is no legitimate correlation between the game's result and the economy, Moffatt said that if investors had used Super Bowl results to make financial decisions between 1967 and 1988, they would have successfully beat the market.
