| Economic stress in U.S. reaches 16-month low, according to AP data |

The nation's economic stress hit a 16-month low in September, according to analysis by The Associated Press.
The news provider's most recent data indicates that the economy is heading in the right direction, as 80 percent of the 3,141 counties in the U.S. - and all but six states - experienced some easing of their economic pain. Several regions showed signs of recovery during September New England increased hiring, the Mid-Atlantic recorded fewer foreclosures and the Southeast showed a decline in bankruptcy filings.
The news source said the average county's stress score - which is based on unemployment, foreclosure and bankruptcy rates - was 10 in September, which was down from 10.3 in August. The number of counties that were considered "stressed" was down 40 percent from August. The last time the average was as low as 10 was in May of 2009.
While some statistics show progress in the nation's economic recovery, many small-business owners are not as confident. A Reuters poll that was released last week reveals that nearly half of small-business owners in the U.S. believe the recovery will come in the second half of 2011. |
