| Future of coffee industry discussed at New York City panel event |

Business owners and hospitality leaders recently gathered in New York City to discuss the future of the coffee industry.
The Great Coffee Debate was held on October 28 at The International Culinary Center, welcoming entrepreneurs, executives and experts to address the present and future of the coffee business. The topics ranged from the growing and harvesting of coffee beans to the packaging dynamics utilized by merchants.
The featured panel at the event included Wolfgang Lindlbauer, the senior vice president of food and design and development for Marriot International, and Donald Schoenholt, president of Gillies Coffee Company. The group agreed that strong relationships between growers and roasters are the best path to increasing growers' profits.
Panelists debated whether single origin or blended coffee produces a better product, as well as what are the best packaging methods for food at coffee bars.
The Seattle Times reports that coffee shops in Washington state's largest city has started selling alcohol in an attempt to increase profits. Matt Milleto, vice president of the American Barista and Coffee School, told the news provider that the average coffeehouse transaction is between $6.25 and $6.50 for merchants that offer beer and wine, compared to $4.25 for those stores that do not. |
