Sports business program at Northwestern has new leader

12/3/2010

Northwestern University has named Curt Gruber its new director of the school's master of arts in sports administration (MSA) curriculum, which one faculty member said is "modeled after MBA programs with a sports theme."

Gruber replaces Dan Migala, who left the post to serve as vice president of creative partnerships for the San Diego Padres, a professional baseball team. Gruber has been an MSA instructor at Northwestern for the last four years, while also contributing to several professional sports organizations. As vice president of business development for the Chicago Wolves hockey team, he implemented marketing initiatives that helped the organization notch the top ranking in increased ticket revenue for an American Hockey League (AHL) team.

The MSA program at Northwestern currently has 500 active students who are aiming for successful careers in the sports industry.

"I can't think of a better way to get started in professional sports than to complete a graduate sports administration degree from Northwestern," said Ted Phillips, president and CEO of the Chicago Bears professional football team.

Many campus-based and online colleges offer MBA programs with specialties in sports management and administration. According to PayScale.com, individuals who receive similar degrees in this field can make up to $45,000 within four years of graduation.
