Top MBA admissions test to change

7/1/2010

Many business schools are becoming more competitive, which has inspired admissions experts to seek the fairest, most comprehensive ways to measure applicants' competencies.

This trend has resulted in changes to commonly used examinations, including the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT).

Beginning in 2012, the exam - which is the most popular business admission test - will include an analytic section, which will replace one of the essay questions, Inside Higher Ed reports.

The new portion will require students to examine a series of spreadsheets, tables, text and other information, and then answer questions about the data. Many of the questions will have multiple correct answers, and test-takers will be asked to provide all of the proper responses within 30 minutes.

Officials from the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC), which administers the test, say that the new section is intended to provide a more comprehensive measure of each student's capabilities.

Numerous MBA degree candidates will be affected by the change, as GMAC reports that a record number of prospective business students took the GMAT last year.

The new exam is a "test by business schools for business schools," Ashok Sarathy, vice president of the GMAC's GMAT program, told the news source.
