The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School was recently selected by the Wall Street Journal as the best business school in the world.
When ranking the top master of business administration (MBA) programs this year, the judging panel considered the impact of the recession. In the aftermath of the economic crisis, more MBA students have been paying their own way through school and hunting for jobs while they're enrolled.
The news source states that today's business-minded scholars have specific demands, such as more focus on specialized training, career coaching and job placement. In addition, cash-strapped companies that sponsor students are expecting a fair return on their investments.
The newspaper surveyed graduates from 64 business schools in 18 countries and garnered feedback from 189 corporate managers. The Wharton School, which has campuses in Philadelphia and San Francisco, scored the highest marks and moved up from its second-place ranking in 2008.
Earlier this year, Business Week ranked the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business as the top MBA school, citing the institution's large alumni base that helps young professionals find jobs.
