Serving in the military may be one of the best methods of preparation for aspiring business students, according to a veteran of the Iraq war who is pursuing his MBA degree at Cornell University.
According to The Cornell Daily Sun, Evan Pettyjohn said that joining the Marines and two deployments in Iraq have instilled leadership skills that cannot be acquired at any other job. He added that the chaos that soldiers endure on the battlefield can help individuals become confident in a fierce business environment.
"You become comfortable in dealing with ambiguity - a quality that has helped me as an MBA student here at Cornell," he told the media outlet.
Pettyjohn was a public affairs officer, which allowed him to bolster his communication skills while trying to help inform the American public about the war. He was responsible for assisting journalists who were covering the war as well as training Iraqi officers to assume his role once he returned to America.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, service in the armed forces can pave the way to reduced - or fully covered - college tuition. The GI Bill program aims to help military personnel pursue a higher education after they complete active duty. The size of the education benefits is scaled to the state and to the institution that the veteran is attending, the bureau reports. |
